I did a little digging of my own, and DAMN that lake is huge, however the spot where this person probably is of course ISNT 370 feet deep, the lake probably gets DOWN to that in the deeper areas, and thats all well and fine, naturally we know that light gets refracted by water, and thus that shadow is WAY too large and WAY too close to her to actually be that deep, on top of that, as I said, I beleive I have found the approximate location for this picture, on the very VERY northern section of this lake, there is a river that feeds into this lake (I would surmise that this lake was likely formed by a dam further down river, more on that later)
I cannot be 100% sure of the location, as I did not take the picture, but lets look at facts:
1.) sunny day, sun appears to be strongest on the upper left hand side of the picture (indicating probably 11-12), in addition the shadow of the flotation device is off to the right/bottom indicating again a upper left hand side source of light.
2.) on the upper right hand side we see trees (the reflection of them) rather close by, and as such the only way this would be possible would be for the trees to logically BE on that side (that counts out about half of the lake, as the lake would need to curve in a very specific way for the trees to be shown in such a way, AKA shoreline)
3.) we do not know how the image was taken either, whether the person was on a boat (and any ripples photoshopped out) or if they were on the shore with a decent lens.
4.) we know this was taken for NG magazine, which really means that they do have a history of photoshopping images to their liking, so indeed the trees could be fake!
5.) we see logs in the bottom of the river, the ONLY location on that lake were logs were readily present (according to Google Maps) was the northern bank, to the WEST of the river that feeds it, I would surmise this river is used to float logs southward (or was, note though that these logs dont look TOO terribly old)
So given all of that this is my probable location for this image
Enjoy my research, I actually did.
This is Flathead Lake in northwestern Montana, USA. The water is so transparent that it seems that this is a quite shallow lake. In fact, it is 370.7 feet deep.
NO WAY.
What
for real?!
